7 Steps For Mental Fitness During COVID-19 Lockdown

Mental Health During COVID-19 Quarantine

A recent poll found more than three-quarters of Americans feel unsafe outside their homes amid the pandemic for fear of catching COVID-19. Whether this applies to you is conditional. Maybe you are required to stay home because of being quarantined. Either way, my article on 7 Steps For Mental Fitness During COVID-19 Lockdown may prove useful.

What Is Mental Fitness?

It hasn’t been easy this past year having to stay home so much because of the shutdown. I am well past stir-crazy and find myself on edge much more often. So, I set out on a personal path to regain my sense of wellness and began searching for feel good foods and activities.

Mental fitness means keeping your brain and emotional health in tip-top shape. It doesn’t mean training to be on “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader” or to nail some IQ test. It refers to a series of exercises that help you:

  • Stay healthy
  • Keep safe by being alert
  • Slow down, relax and decompress
  • Boost a failing memory

I am having a great time learning to cook in new ways, sometimes with special supplements (wink-wink) and I started to care for my first Bonsai tree! My family has noticed a positive change in me.

7 Steps For Mental Fitness During COVID-19 Lockdown

I have always strived on feeding my mind to keep it active and happy. By surrounding myself with stimulating places and people that bring me joy I’ve kept my sanity.

Now it is more important than ever, in the midst of COVID and all the other nonsense 2020 is bringing us, to strive to maintain a healthy mind.

Daily Excercise

Exercise for at least 20 minutes most days of the week. This one is easy for me because I can take our dog for a walk around our community.

I have homemade costumes for her and it’s fun to get reactions from the other people when I’m out for a walk! Check out these outfits from Pet Krewe!

Intellectual Curiosity

Spend some time in focused thought, exploring new ideas every day. An easy trick for this is simply being inquisitive. When you something, ask why. Or ask how that work and then ponder it. I like randomly exploring with Google Earth, you never know what you might find1

Foster Creativity

Challenge your mind to connect unrelated ideas in new and useful ways.  Fantasize or allow yourself to daydream. Start drawing or painting, or like I did start caring for a Bonsai tree.

Companionship

Create and maintain close-knit human bonds and form a social support network.  In this day of social distancing just be sure to stay connected with family and friends. Ask if you need help setting up some kind of video chat.

Eat Brain Food!

Food at the top of the brain-fuel list include high-fiber whole grains, dairy, and fruits. Just don’t overeat. A protein source linked to a great brain boost is fish — rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are key for brain health. In addition, Nuts and seeds are a plant-based source of healthful fats and proteins. A 2014 study found that a higher overall nut intake was linked to better brain function in older age.

Special note: For some added stress relief, I have a couple of recipes for treats with some CBD that produce a feeling of well being.

Embrace Simplicity

Embrace the feeling of freedom that comes with wanting and needing less. I am honestly leaning towards being a minimalist now. Having less clutter around directly correlates to feeling less stress.

Practice Feng Shui

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice which claims to use energy forces to harmonize individuals with their surrounding environment. My Bonsai tree is Feng shui!

Connect With Your Inner Self

Have ever heard the little voice in your head? Do you ignore it or try foster the communication? I try hard to get in touch with my inner self. I’ll write more on the subject later but I have been having some success meditating (not easy).

Subliminal Messaging

Subliminal Messaging is a great way to get in touch with your self-confidence. If it didn’t work it wouldn’t be used so often in advertising. Many titles to choose from including building self-confidence, improving memory and weight loss.

Connect With Nature

Identify a Source of inspiration that is bigger than you. This can be as simple as pondering the night sky. I love star gazing and thinking about creation. I also love taking day trips to the mountains. The breath taking views are soothing to me and is one way I can fully recharge and give myself a sense of being centered again.

Another way I’ve learned to relax is writing about my experiences here on this blog. A great way to pass the time!
